In Memoriam, Charles D. “Charlie” McMahon
“My name is Genevra McMahon Lohman and my father, Charles Daniel McMahon, who went by “Charlie,” enjoyed the 4P’s restaurant and pub for as long as I can remember. My father was always a hard worker, providing for his many children and his time spent at the 4P’s always brought him joy and helped him to relax from the stresses of life.
Unfortunately, over five years ago my father developed Parkinson’s disease and sadly, it very quickly turned into Lewy Body dementia. To me it is one the most heartbreaking diseases to see a loved one go through. They suffer immensely and there is no cure. I pray one day it will be eradicated so families will not have to witness their loved ones’ pain inside and out. I loved my dad so very much and I will miss him forever. I cannot wait until I can see him again, in heaven and have a huge hug!
Walking this painful path with my father over the last five years and more, it was a blessing for me that I was able to travel every 3-4 months from Atlanta, Georgia to Falls Church, Virginia. I would visit him at The Kensington assisted living facility where he spent the last years of good life on their memory care unit. It enabled me to have uninterrupted special time with just my dad. Sometimes I would read to him and a lot of times I would spoon-feed him, one of the things he most enjoyed.
During my visits, whatever stage of dementia he happened to be at that day, I would go there with him. Sometimes he believed we were waiting at a train station for hours and while waiting we would talk. When he had brief periods of lucidity, I would video him laughing and telling me memories of travel and stories of me as a little girl. Dad’s favorite thing to do was to tell me he was hungry and he wanted to take me to the 4P’s for dinner and drinks. My playing along with this became a ritual we performed at each of my visits. To prepare the scene, I would ask the Kensington staff ahead of time to prepare two small tables with silverware wrapped in cloth napkins and to set these next to each other in his room so it might look to him a little bit like his favorite pub. They would happily do so and say to us, “Welcome to the 4P’s, Charlie! It’s wonderful to see you again!” The chef at The Kensington would prepare a special dinner and the amazing staff would also bring us “red wine” in fancy wine glasses that he thought was Merlot. We had THE BEST time! He would talk to people who weren’t there and introduce me as his precious oldest daughter. It made me sad but so happy for him at the same time! For just a while, he had no problems and was just having fun!
I just want to thank the 4P’s for the peace, relaxation, conversation and laughter and my gratitude for all that they have done throughout the years! I want to recognize the 4P’s for giving my father happiness when he had very little…my family The McMahon’s had his celebration of life at the 4P’s after his funeral and I just want to say a Million times THANK YOU for making everything just the way Dad would have wanted it! From the great conversations with all the people he loved, children and grandchildren running around happy, amazing food, drinks from the bar and overall a perfect way to celebrate MY dad The Irishman! I cannot wait to see him again and maybe in heaven there will be a 4P’s!!! Thank you so much. -his loving daughter Genevra McMahon Lohman, husband Eric Lohman, and two of our dad’s many grandchildren, Cecelia and Alex.”
